One of the most iconic oval squares in the world, Piazza dell'Anfiteatro has a rich history as well. The square follows the elliptical shape of the Roman amphitheater the square was built on. Later, buildings inside the square were removed to create the form visitors can see today. The square is also marked by four passageways that create a cross in plan and the square serves as a secluded space for cafes and marketplace activities.
